IN REMEMBERANCE OF VILIAMI TANGINOA
On 22 Dec 2000, Viliami Tanginoa died at the Maribyrnong Detention Centre. Tormented beyond endurance by ACM guards, refused access to food, water and counselling, he jumped to his death at 4 pm, having spent the whole day from about 7:30am at the top of a basketball pole in the yard. Mr. Tanginoa had received a letter from DIMA (Departement of Immigration & Multicultural Affairs) saying he was to be deported that day. Mr. Tanginoa had lived and worked in Australia for 17 years, supporting his family here and in Tonga. Exactly one year later, the Refugee Action Collective has organised a rally in rememberance of Viliami Tanginoa, and to distribute Seasons Greetings Cards from the detainees at Maribyrnong.

UPDATE ON PEACE VIGIL TENT CITY @ STATE LIBRARY (DAYS 4, 5 AND 6)

Crowds at the Tent City have definately grown and many more people are now aware of the Vigil happening on the lawns of the State Library. On the sixth day, the activists were joined by high school students who had walked off class to join the vigil.
As the Peace Vigil
is heading towards the first week, the management from the State Library has tried to get the activists' camp evicted by presenting them their lists of by-laws, which, according to lawyers representing the activists, haven't got much of a legal value. Representatives of the State Library have tried to "reach an agreement" with the peace activists to reduce the amount of tents and people present on their lawns.

ABORIGINAL EMBASSY

The Aboriginal Embassy in Canberra will celebrate 30 years of Survival early next year. The celebrations will surely be a thorn in the side of the government, who will be completing construction of the new federation square and reconciliation place, and is expecting to launch the grand opening with the queen early next year, too. Over the years, the Aboriginal Embassy had to endure countless attacks by the forces of (dis)order. Only weeks ago, the government tried once again to shut down the Embassy, so it can persue undisturbed it's reconciliation policy. Needless to say, the Embassy is still standing. These two videos show interviews with two longstanding Aboriginal activists. The FIRST video shows Arabunna elder, uncle Kevin Buzzacott, who recently returned from Ireland after winning a Peace Award. The SECOND video features Warajirie warrior Darren Bloomfield, resident at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA: SOLIDARITY WITH GENOVA

JULY 2001: On Tuesday the 24th of July, a small group of Anarchists held a peaceful vigil in front of the Italian Consulate to show solidarity with the political prisoners of the Anti-G8 demos and denounce the killing of Carlo Giuliani. At their arrival about a dozen cops were standing in front of the entrance to the consulate, but the majority of them soon left to "check out the situation" at the Indonesian Consulate where, as they were told by the Anarchist a big demo was held. Needless to say, there was NO big demo at the Indonesian Consulate, and the only police officer remaining was left to deal with the Anarchists. Non the less, their request to meet officials at the Italian Consulate was denied.
