The Nominees are :
Jabiluka Action Group
Jabiluka Action Group has relentlessly blockaded North
Ltd's city office in
a strong show of solidarity with the Mirrar people in the fight in Kakadu
to stop the Jabiluka uranium mine. Activists started the blockades when
approval for the mine was first announced, and since then workers don't
know
when to expect to be greeted by chanting, singing arm-linked protesters
first thing in the morning.
Security, in particular, doesn't seem to comprehend the principles
of
non-violent direct action. JAG has successfully taken this issue to the mainstream,
and now it could be safely said, most people could tell you that North Ltd
is the company behind the mine.
Maritime Union of Australia
East Swanston Dock Community Assembly
Here to Stay and stay they did. In the middle of the night
on April 7 1998,
Patrick Stevedore's head, Chris Corrigan, ordered in security guards with
dogs
to evict and sack all Patrick's dock-workers across Australia.
This did not have the desired effect: the MUA mobilised
its members at
picket lines at every Patrick terminal in Australia and the campaign
grew and grew with the support of the community who came from
all over Victoria to voice their outrage at the sackings.
Victory came for the union in the courts in the end, but it was in assembly that the greatest victory for the community was won.
Mirrar Gundjehmi - Jabiluka Action Group
The people of the Mirrar Gundjehmi clan, in their continuing
campaign
for self determination, and the Jabiluka Action Groups put together
what was to become one of Australia's largest and
most long lived protest camps.
Thousands of people visited the camp and were involved
in direct actions to fight for indigenous and
environmental rights.
Human land rights have been furthered in a way
and on a scale which makes the Jabiluka Protest Camp
one of the most significant and practical
acts of reconciliation in Australia's history.
And the joint winners are :
Mirrar Gundjehmi - Jabiluka Action Group
and Maritime Union of Australia
