The Nominees are :
Pauline Pantsdown
In the wake of One Nation's intolerance towards it's fellow
Australians, Pauline Pantsdown (also known as Simon Hunt)
laboriously sifted through hours of footage from speeches
by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson to create the
musical masterpiece 'I'm a backdoor man'.
Ms Pantsdown's first hit was soon followed by a second track 'I don't like it'.
The Victorian Council of School Organisations
'MECHTRON' - Education From Womb to Tomb
Thursday 6th August - Friday 28th August 1998
Nominated in this category last year for their play, "The
Essentials", this year's
production by VICCSO traced the recent past - and daunting potential future
-
of the community at 'Koala Vale Primary School'. The initial response to
the
opening of Mechtron was such that its season was extended by six days to
cater for demand.
David Larwill · Mark Schaller · Peter Walsh
At the invitation of the Mirrar Traditional Owners, Melbourne artists David Larwill, Mark Schaller and Peter Walsh travelled to the country threatened by the existing Ranger and proposed Jabiluka uranium mines. - Community Arts Project
East Swanston Dock Community Assembly
During the peaceful assembly at East Swanston Dock, some
of the more
artistic members decided to cheer the place up by creating a sculpture in
steel.
Using tonnes of railway tracks and a large amount of lifting
and welding,
the sculpture inadvertently became an incredibly effective blockade.
Unfortunately, when the Community Assembly was over, the sculpture had to be dismantled as it was realised it would prevent trucks from gaining access to the Patrick terminal.
Shut Up and Shop - Graffiti
Artist
Prolific graffiti artist, spreading a message confronting
the extremes of mass consumption and third world debt,
Shut Up and Shop has been active for over 7 years and
has remained anonymous throughout this time.
The artist has focussed particularly on the connection
between mass consumerism and third world starvation and debt.
Midnight Oil
1998 saw Midnight Oil celebrate their twenty first year
together
with the band touring Australia and presenting an anti-Jabiluka
stage production including performances for protesters at the Jabiluka Lease.
Midnight Oil fans also experienced some particularly memorable
moments when the band fronted in a guerrilla-style action to
the Exxon Building in New York. Performing in front of
a crowd of 10,000 people, the impromptu concert was held
to highlight the devastation caused by the
Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound.
And the winner is :
